President's Invited Lecture: A Vision for Clinical Research: From the Clinic to the Community
Jane Bear-Lehman, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA
Learn how a model for translational research can be considered a next step for hand research and a strategic plan for bringing clinical hand research beyond its immediate focus to demonstrate its potential use for broader societal impact. Research empowers clinical practice, as it provides the evidence for informed decision-making. The new catch phrase in medicine and among federal research funding agencies is "models for translational research." These models are reliant on evidence-based practice and outcome research. However, for hand therapists, there are several key distinctions that our practice of clinical research should not only address, but also enable us to posture ourselves to serve as leaders and innovators. In particular, models for translational research call upon interdisciplinary, bi-directional research with an end product that directly impacts the community. Specifically, the translational research model requires equally important bi-directional relationships that bring the older, well-accepted model of "bench to clinic" full circle, empowering the meaning of clinical research to directly impact our knowledge.

Youth Overhead Sports Injuries
Timothy Ian Day, MBAB. APP.SCI (PHYSIO)
Children play overhand sports with immature skeletons; hence, the injuries they endure are different to those that adults suffer. Overuse injuries are increasing each year in children, and as such, they need to be identified and managed accordingly.
